Code of conduct

1. Purpose

Alicante Frontend is a nonprofit community of frontend developers from Alicante and the surrounding area. The purpose of this community is to share knowledge and experiences about the development work we enjoy, and sometimes suffer through, in our day-to-day lives. A core goal of this community is to be inclusive of as many contributors as possible, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, ability, ethnicity, socioeconomic status or religion (or lack thereof).

This code of conduct outlines our expectations for everyone who participates in our community, as well as the consequences of unacceptable behavior.

We invite everyone who takes part in Alicante Frontend to help us create safe and positive experiences for all.

2. Civility in open source

A complementary goal of this code of conduct is to promote civility in the open source community by encouraging participants to recognize and strengthen the relationship between our actions and their effects on our community.

Discussions within the community revolve around frontend development and the IT sector. If a member of the community feels uncomfortable because of a topic that has nothing to do with development or the IT sector and asks to redirect the conversation, we will return to the topics planned on the day’s agenda. The #random channel on Slack is the only place for more general topics, and even there the rest of this code applies.

Active or passive participation in group activities is optional and entails no obligation. Anyone who decides to speak may do so, provided they respect the opinions of others and comply with the rest of this code of conduct.

If you see someone making an outstanding effort to help make our community welcoming and friendly and to encourage all participants to contribute their best, we want to hear about it.

3. Expected behavior

The following behaviors are expected and requested of all members of the community:

  • Participate in an authentic and active way. In doing so, you contribute to the health and longevity of this community.
  • Show consideration and respect in your speech and actions.
  • Attempt collaboration before conflict.
  • Refrain from degrading, discriminatory or harassing behavior and speech.
  • Be mindful of your surroundings and of your fellow participants. Alert community leaders if you notice a dangerous situation, someone in distress, or violations of this code of conduct, even if they seem inconsequential.
  • Remember that the venues where community events take place may be shared with other people; please be respectful of all users of these venues.

4. Unacceptable behavior

The following behaviors are considered harassment and are unacceptable within our community:

  • Violence, threats of violence or violent language directed against another person.
  • Sexist, racist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist or otherwise discriminatory jokes and language.
  • Posting or displaying violent or sexually explicit material.
  • Posting or threatening to post other people’s personally identifying information (doxing).
  • Personal insults, particularly those related to gender, sexual orientation, race, religion or disability.
  • Inappropriate photography or recording.
  • Inappropriate physical contact. Make sure you have someone’s consent before touching them.
  • Unwelcome sexual attention. This includes sexualized comments or jokes, inappropriate physical contact (including groping or touching of a sexual nature) and unwelcome sexual advances.
  • Deliberate intimidation, stalking or following (online or in person).
  • Sustained, unwelcome or inappropriate staring.
  • Advocating for or encouraging any of the above behaviors.
  • Sustained disruption of community events, including talks and presentations.

5. Consequences of unacceptable behavior

Unacceptable behavior will not be tolerated from any participant in an event, including attendees, sponsors, volunteers and organizing staff.

The measures taken in response to a violation will depend on the context. They may include:

  • Expulsion of the offender from the community for a serious violation.
  • Expulsion of the offender from the community for repeated violations.
  • A warning for the violation and a request for an apology to the community.
  • A warning for a minor violation.

6. Guidelines for filing a complaint

If you are the victim of or a witness to unacceptable behavior, or have any other concerns, please notify a community organizer.

When reporting an incident, state the name of the event and where in the venue the violation of the code of conduct is taking place, and briefly describe the nature of the incident.

Community organizers will help community members contact local authorities and will otherwise assist anyone who has been the victim of unacceptable behavior to feel safe.

7. How to appeal a complaint

If you believe you have been falsely or unfairly accused of violating this code of conduct, you should notify the community organizers with a concise description of your grievance. Your appeal will be handled in accordance with our current policies.

8. Scope

We expect all members of the community (association members as well as attendees at the association’s events, sponsors, volunteers and organizing staff) to abide by this code of conduct in all community spaces, both physical and virtual, as well as in all personal communications relating to community matters.

This code of conduct and its related procedures also apply to unacceptable behavior that occurs outside the scope of community activities when such behavior may affect the safety and well-being of community members.
